Also on Thursday the fence posts were sealed into place with molten lead. And my intern discovered how much dust had settled in the garage, where we store our mailing supplies!
On Friday, the steps up from the patio were completed. The steps have been a matter of some drama and frustration. Originally the risers (vertical portions) and the runs (horizontals) were designed as the same concrete material as the tiles and parapet capstones. But the risers were manufactured incorrectly, so DW and JG decided to use extra stones from the retaining walls instead. All agree that this looks great. Then we discovered that two of the 2'x4' blocks for the runs had arrived with cracks in them. R and DW considered several options for how to substitute materials. Demanding replacements from the
manufacturer was not an option because they came from California and we couldn't wait for a new ground shipment. The solution was to use 2x4 blocks for the first three steps, then four 2x2 blocks for the fourth step. These 2x2s were intended as capstones for the grape planter, which will instead be finished with wall stone.Also on Friday all the bags of soil were opened and spread out in the planting beds, and new bags of mulch came up to the roof. And the final section of fence was installed along the back edge, facing the street.
And most dramatically on Friday, the shed was completed. DR and his crew of artists and writers built the four walls and roof in the garage. Good thing the scissor lift is tall enough to top the new fence. DR got the shed done just in time before flying to Seattle to install an art exhibition (he is also writing a novel about the assassination of one of Black Panthers). When he returns, he'll build the arbor.
