Biggish day: the Fence

Although we've been staring at the fence lying around in pieces for over a week, we were nonetheless startled to see what it looks like once in place. The holes were bored, and in fact produced no dust. DW "helped" carry the sections into position.

Suddenly our garden is contained. We are so used to having a container garden that is completely open to the world: before this construction, the parapets were only one foot high with no fence - one of our many reasons to discourage children from visiting. Now we have a 'real' garden but it has walls! The mesh does provide significant privacy, screening the kitchen window from our nearest neighbors due to the angle of sight. But, from within the garden, we'll be able to look straight out over the other gardens.

The section closest to the house does not have mesh, just three horizontal pipes. This section will become our dining / cooking area, and it will be nice to feel more open there.

For those curious about construction details: the mesh is stainless steel and the pipes are Cor-Ten, a type of steel that is meant to rust and then stabilizes without further destabilization. The pipes are round (I had assumed for no reason that they'd be flat). Today Arie the steel guy said the rust will drip on the stainless and turn it yellow - thanks! DW really likes the industrial ruddiness of Cor-Ten. He likes color, and chose a somewhat risky color to repaint the old elevator shaft. I hope it works!
