We started the morning by letting Charlie circumnavigate the hole. We stretched the garden hose back down from the top roof into the hole so the crew could spray down the dust. Then, hoo boy, the jackhammers definitely got my adrenaline going. Having so many butterflies in my stomach might have stopped me from feeling the building shake - or maybe Sean got more delicate with the backhoe. The crew grew a lot today, and so did the hole. They dropped most of the roofing material down the hole, and used a lift to carry down buckets of gravel (which was under the brick patio) and the bricks that we'll reuse. By the time I got used to the growing hole, it really wasn't a hole anymore. The empty space is eriely peaceful. Charlie won't be going outside again!Meanwhile inside, they sealed off the kitchen wall and removed the kitchen window. DW is shocked - shocked! - to discover that there are termites in the window sill. (Last month the parker whose spot is directly below this wall told him that dead termites were falling on his windshield. Hearing that, I showed him one of the dead bugs that I have been finding in the upper bathroom; he confirmed that it was a termite but insisted that they must be living in the neighbor's garden. Denial is powerful.) Charlie found his way into the plastic seal this evening, and had trouble finding his way out. We'll have to tape down the bottom, otherwise he might jump out the window.
Lots of photos today, so many that some of them will appear on the crew's day off.

Charlie wants to go outside!!! is he going to be confined to quarters for the duration or is there another way to let him out?
Looks great. Termites are not great. I have friends with carpenter ant problems. Yuck.
Fantastic!
Congratulations for your and DW's fantasy, courage and determination to realize another of your dreams while adding another little treasure to that special place, Brooklyn.
Good luck! Enjoy it all!
